Vanishing Act

Well I am the vagrant dog who checked himself into the pound
all of the beggars are from out of town, me I am from out of town
I wander the city, flash my rotten teeth
the grass ain't always greener but the candy's always sweet
I denounce my dependencies, it's easy in the light
but misery creeps in at night, get me a drink, tuck me in tight
all of my bullshit burns holes into my mouth
but if I really wanted out, then I would just get out
I do not need any guidance
and I do not need any amount of your time
maybe I need a little pick-me-up
because all that I need is the strength to reassure myself
I'll write my own damn gospel and I'll preach my own good word
forget the drunken truths you've heard from misguided little birds
but my heady poetry falls limp upon your ears
but that's okay I've got no say in what you want to hear
I'm not the father or the son, I ain't no holy ghost
I'm your self-serving savior, kids, but I'm not one to boast
I'll carry your burdens until they're too much to bear
then I'll disappear and reappear, say I was always there
I'll disappear and say I never left

Sometimes I can't understand what keeps me here
all of the friends I have made? All of them postcards
to preach requires conviction
I mostly just make jokes
sets are made to be struck, not to be lived in
and it's easy to forget that a moment lasts just a moment
to preach requires conviction
i mostly just blow smoke and pace around
I won't fight it, can't deny it
I have been hiding behind my heroes' backs
I heard how it sounded and worked around it
I have caught up with my heroes
I won't fight it, can't deny it
I have been plotting behind my heroes' backs
I heard how it sounded and worked around it
I have turned out like my heroes
Would they let me go if I wanted to go?
if I wanted to go, would they let me go?
if I wanted to go, could I let it go?
If I wanted to go, could I let it go?

This baptist family shares a bond
this blessed gift of interpretation
which god did confide to our father, fred
shortly after his encounter in the men's room
I started those wars (he's an angry god)
disasters and storms (he's a vengeful god)
to inform a country I might despise when a couple's love shares a gender
(he's a cryptic god)
Straight to the source we spread the word
at the funeral of a soldier killed overseas
we mock and protest your dead
out of spite for a group of people with no affiliations
for god came down and said
there's a reason he's gone and we're giving you the heads up
You're going to hell (he's an angry god)
unless you act now (he's a vengeful god)
and stop those sodomites from turning those stains to seed
because stains these days have a tendency to take on more despicable forms
Here in Topeka
Good god, we're trying to help
so drop the anchor, save yourself
because come judgement day we don't want god's entire kingdom to ourselves
because eternity after a lifetime with this family sounds like hell
oh yes it's hatred, god's great hatred
he just needs a medium to more effectively communicate it
recite the chants, hold high the sign
it's not yours but it's god's will that we abide by
you're not gonna change our minds because
regardless of relation, unlike others, we will sever ties
and heaven we're bound (he's an angry god)
you're lost and we're found (he's a vengeful god)
who thought salvation would come out of action in this kansas town?
though god's verdict's always guilty,
we're hoping he'll let us off with time served
Here in Topeka
Good god, we're trying to help
so drop the anchor, save yourself
because come judgement day we don't want god's entire kingdom to ourselves
because eternity after a lifetime with this family sounds like hell

I will leave, I won't even say my peace
I won't be the ghost that haunts you
though it hurt, you were never what I thought
you were never what I thought you'd be
No you're crass and you're cold
you're a devil with a pretty face
Caroline, I swear I never called you mine
I swear I never thought you'd love
but that's a lie, still it's better than the truth
Honesty can be so ugly
and the truth doesn't matter because it's always taking sides
Maybe we'll save it or maybe we'll go our separate ways
I've got so much to say when there's nothing to say
I know that you left but maybe we forgot to close the door
still I don't see you no more
